Book Review: Happy Place

Harriet and Wyn were college sweethearts with the perfect relationship. They encouraged each other and never argued. When two members of a friend group start dating, the equilibrium is often knocked of kilter, but not with them. Somehow, their relationship made the whole group stronger. That’s why they haven’t told the group they broke up. They just have to keep up the charade for one last week during the group’s annual lake getaway. But with each couple harboring a secret of their own, things are bound to bubble to the surface.

I love an Emily Henry romcom. This, however, wasn’t my favorite largely because the romance itself didn’t thrill me. This is partly because second chance romance is not my favorite trope and partly because I wasn’t fully convinced that they were right for each other because they never felt fully comfortable communicating. All that said, you’ll see I gave it a pretty high rating. That’s because I did like that this highlighted the beautiful love that is friendship. Sometimes platonic relationships go through the same ups and downs as romantic ones and require similar care and communication. Seeing the dynamic of deep friendship love directly adjacent to an example of romantic love was special.
